Seeded sixth in the discus based on her best throw at the Ben Davis Regional 11 days earlier, the Greenwood senior figured a sixth-place medal would be worthy of celebration. Anything better was simply gravy. Imagine the look on Gardner’s face when her new school-record toss of 152 feet, 7 inches put her in the lead and kept her there for the duration of the competition.

    In a fitting setting — a Franklin Plan Commission meeting — city leaders honored long-time member Jim Martin. Martin has been a member of the commission for 34 years, also serving on the board of zoning appeals and in other capacities for the city. Mayor Steve Barnett and Senior Planner Joanna Tennell presented Martin with a plaque to recognize his service at the Tuesday plan commission meeting.
