Out LGBTQ pro track and field athletes, led by two gay men with two wins — including one by “track’s new lover boy” — made for a banner weekend at the third event of Grand Slam Track in Philadelphia. One of the LGBTQ athletes also gave a meaningful shout-out to Pride Month. Maybe the biggest win this weekend was by Nico Young, who won the men’s 3,000 meters in his first Grand Slam Track event.

The California Interscholastic Federation, which runs most high school sports in the state, announced Tuesday that additional competitors will be placed in certain events due to the presence of a transgender girl athlete who qualified for the May 30-31 state championship meet. The change was announced hours after President Trump criticized the state for allowing trans women to compete in women’s sports and specifically cited the trans high school athlete.

Four the last four years Becky Pepper-Jackson, a transgender girl in West Virginia, has been in court fighting over a chance to play sports as much as she’s been at the starting line or in the throws ring. This past weekend, now a 14-year-old freshman at Bridgeport (W.V.) High, went to her state’s high school track and field championships and put her name in a piece of history. She became the first transgender student-athlete to compete in the championships.
