The Trump administration’s slate of tariffs on the car business has accelerated Nissan Motor’s plans to make more cars in the U.S., a top executive said. The Japanese automaker aims to produce 80% of its U.S.-sold cars in America, up from roughly half today, said Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas. “If you want to be a critical player in the U.S., you need to be localized,” Meunier said on the sidelines of the New York auto show.

Mazda for now will absorb about $100 million in tariff-related costs this month without resorting to price increases, the Japanese automaker told its U.S. dealers. In an email to dealers Wednesday, viewed by the Journal, Mazda said that it wouldn’t raise its sticker prices or tack on import fees to any vehicles that are on dealership lots or that come into the country before May 1.
