In 1843, Hans Christian Andersen wrote a fairy tale called "The Ugly Duckling". TL:DR? The duckling is kinda funny-looking, but grows up to be a beatiful swan. As to what that has to do with the 2025 Acura ADX:This is the Honda HR-V---a $25,400 subcompact SUV ($29,500 in top trim shown here) with 158 horsepower that takes 11.5 seconds to get to 60 miles per hour from a standing stop. This is the 2025 Acura ADX. It's based on the HR-V, but it's very different.

Driving 104 cars a year exposes me to a lot of automobiles. I'd like to think it gives me some pretty good insights. Still, I'm aware that it's a life unmoored from some fundamental realities---like, y'know---actually paying for these vehicles with my own hard-earned money. Hot on the heels of last month’s review of the Volkswagen Taos, we have another entrant in the very competitive subcompact SUV segment. The Hyundai Kona is a futuristic-looking (at least from the front) vehicle that can be had as both a gasoline-powered car and an electric vehicle. It is a crowded niche of vehicles, including the Kia Niro (“On The Road,” February 2023), the Kia Soul (“On The Road,” October 2023) and the Honda HR-V (“On The Road,” September 2022).

Another month, and another California electric vehicle that isn’t a Tesla. Last month, we featured Newark’s own Lucid Air Pure (“On The Road,” April 2025), and now we have the Irvine-based Rivian (with a significant presence just up the street in Palo Alto). While Lucid makes sedans (with an SUV, the Gravity, on the way), Rivian makes what it calls “adventure vehicles.” So far, there’s an SUV and a pickup, the R1T.
