Karen Everhart has been named interim executive director of Current, effective April 4, following a leadership transition. Everhart is Current’s managing editor, a role she has held since 2012, when she helped lead the newsroom’s strategic redirection to digital-first publishing. She assumes the interim role following the departure of former Executive Director Julie Drizin. Before becoming managing editor, Everhart was a senior editor for Current.

Joe Gwathmey, who founded Texas Public Radio in San Antonio after co-founding NPR and serving as a programming executive at the network, died March 12 from natural causes. He was 84. “My sweet daddy passed away tonight,” his daughter Sara Gwathmey wrote on Facebook. “Jesus came and got him to walk him home. He left us peacefully. [W]e were all in the room with him. I am so, so sad but relieved.

The CDP Public Media Index is reporting a strong start to 2025. The Membership Revenue Index shows a year-over-year increase of 5% for the three-month period ending Jan. 31 compared to the same three months in 2024. In both years, these months would include Giving Tuesday and end-of-calendar-year giving, traditionally peak revenue periods. This year we also had a presidential election season and a new administration, which could be driving increased news tune-in.

Operator of St. Louis' KDHX files for bankruptcy

The nonprofit that operates St. Louis community music station KDHX announced Monday that it is declaring bankruptcy after a sharp decrease in donations spurred by a yearslong dispute between leadership of the station and its volunteers and listeners. In 2021, Double Helix Corp., which controls the station, generated revenue of $2.7 million, according to an IRS tax filing. In a February court filing, an attorney for the organization said it had less than $7,000 in cash.
