Karen Everhart has been named interim executive director of Current, effective April 4, following a leadership transition. Everhart is Current’s managing editor, a role she has held since 2012, when she helped lead the newsroom’s strategic redirection to digital-first publishing. She assumes the interim role following the departure of former Executive Director Julie Drizin. Before becoming managing editor, Everhart was a senior editor for Current.

Joe Gwathmey, who founded Texas Public Radio in San Antonio after co-founding NPR and serving as a programming executive at the network, died March 12 from natural causes. He was 84. “My sweet daddy passed away tonight,” his daughter Sara Gwathmey wrote on Facebook. “Jesus came and got him to walk him home. He left us peacefully. [W]e were all in the room with him. I am so, so sad but relieved.
