I feel sorry for ArsenalIs sympathy an emotion that a football fan should feel? Aren’t we supposed to be elated or disgusted? Well, I feel sorry for us. I’m sure at the end of the season that I will write a piece sharing all of the emotions that we went through and come to the conclusion that it wasn’t one problem that saw us fall short in the league. For now, I just feel bad for the players, staff and fans. I think it was this tweet by James Benge that prompted this emotion.

‘I can’t prove it, but…’I’m sitting in Tennessee getting ready to watch Max play a soccer game. It’s a lovely day. The kind where the wind is warm and the sun isn’t too hot. It hasn’t kicked off yet so I’m spending my time watching this little guy who is intently watching the game that is currently going on. His head turns as the ball moves, but he stays spread eagle and sunbathing. His state of being reminds me of how I was a few hours ago watching Arsenal.

‘Juice Boost’The guillotines were being ordered. If we didn’t get a decent result then they were going to be wheeled towards N5 for ‘bottling another season.’ Not only did that not happen but the literal opposite happened. An utter spanking. It’s a reminder of how quickly great players look vanilla because Arsenal’s chance of winning anything was falling under ‘no chance,’ due to our lack of firepower. I’d imagine that Arteta has continued his philosophy of no excuses.

Have no fear. I’m not going to scream and shout. I would hope that you read this because I offer solutions and some unique analysis. Never wanted to do a match report and most certainly don’t ever want to try to get readers by being Awesome McTerrible even though those that go extreme are certainly more popular. I was super relaxed about the game today. For one of the only times this season, Arteta and his staff were given a full week to prepare for a football match.

‘Forgettable and consequential’Oh boy, that game was rusty and forgettable. Oh boy, that game was memorable and consequential. So many things were true about this game that did not seem possible at the same time. We looked like we made more bad decisions in the first hour than we have for the rest of 2025 combined. The rust was likely the reason but there was no time for rust.

‘Arsenal just elevated’Sometimes it’s hard to see the big picture when you’ve just watched an individual game. Even if it’s a 5-1 win over City. Whatever the very large percentage of the footballing world is that do not support Arsenal, they are now talking about Arsenal in glowing terms. And so they should. Even though City aren’t the version that stomped everyone in their path, smacking City around is not normal. So, where does this put Arsenal? Is it just a a great result?

‘Losing the point’Apathy is possibly the worst emotion. I experienced it today. Apathy for one of my favourite things. Max seemed bothered with me in the second half because I wasn’t paying full attention to the game. He kept giving me the ‘what the heck am I doing’ look. I had to check myself too. Why wasn’t I fully attentive? I’d somewhat checked out because subconsciously I have started to lose the point of watching my team play. I anticipate that we are going to be shafted. Deliberately.

‘If there were trophies for everything’by Mike McDonaldThe game was winding down. Max and I were in the Arsenal pub in Knoxville and the tension was palpable. About 30 Arsenal fans likely all thinking the same as me. We cannot drop any points to this Spurs team. It wasn’t entitlement, bias or just chest thumping. It wasn’t even that regardless of opponent, Arsenal just can’t drop points until they catch Liverpool.
