Back by popular demand, Butte-Silver Bow’s “Alley Rally” garbage drop-off program starts this week, giving folks a central location in Butte to get rid of many things without going to the landfill west of town. Commissioners formally renewed a $35,000 contract with Community, Counseling and Correctional Service Inc. last week and the site off of East Iron Street, just below the Belmont Senior Center on Shields Avenue, opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The sign on a greenhouse at the Butte Rescue Mission is simple: “Paul Maloy Sr. — Butte Rescue Mission’s “Pioneer Gardener’Maloy started a garden on a bleak, vacant lot next to the Mission’s previous site on East Second Street in Butte in the 1970s to give its homeless patrons a therapeutic activity to pursue. He helped them grow plants and food and even hauled water to the garden on a regular basis.

Republican state Rep. John Fitzpatrick of Anaconda has been central to prison expansion in Montana and sponsored legislation this past session that puts big money toward that. Among other things, he said House Bill 833 includes about $250 million in appropriations to address the growing female inmate population. About $220 million of that is set aside for construction of a new women’s prison. He said a location has not been selected.
