Butte-Silver Bow commissioners have agreed to sell 606 acres in the county’s industrial park to a company that wants to build a potentially sprawling data center. The pending $1.21 million land sale to an LLC for Sabey Data Centers comes amid growing debate over data centers in Montana and concerns their large electricity usage will lead to higher residential rates for NorthWestern Energy customers.

A bill that has fueled more divisions between paid and volunteer firefighters in Butte-Silver Bow County is on its way to Gov. Greg Gianforte for consideration. His signature is the last hurdle needed for it to become law. House Bill 547 would effectively give the chief of Butte’s paid firefighters clear command over that department and the nine volunteer departments in Butte-Silver Bow County. Many volunteer firefighters here are vehemently opposed to it, saying it will strip their autonomy.
