With a definitely improved weather picture, the host Arcade Area FastPitch Cardinal 12-Under softball team, sponsored by Springville Door and Window, finished second at their tournament this weekend, May 9-11. The locals finished 4-2 overall. In game one on May 9, Cardinal FastPitch defeated the Lake Shore Storm, 15-6. Layla Batterson struck out seven in the circle for the win. Leah Johnson and McKenzie Bauder scored three runs each to pace the offense.

In boys’ track action last week, Pioneer defeated visiting Lake Shore in an ECIC III meet, 98-43, on May 7, and tied for sixth place at the 26-team Jamestown Invitational on May 10. The Panthers are 4-0 in ECIC III and 6-0 overall. The Panthers won 13 events and the Eagles won four.

Pioneer lost all five ECIC III softball starts in last week’s action. On May 5, host Iroquois defeated the Panthers, 11-1. The Red Hawks led 6-1 going into the bottom of the sixth and rallied for five more runs to pull away. Coach Caleb Palmatier said that the Panthers kept the game close with two inning ending double-plays, highlighting many good plays in the field. Lake Shore visited Pioneer for Senior Night on May 6 and the Eagles beat the Panthers, 13-1.
