    In recent years there have been several cases of sports events being mired in political controversy. The YouGov Sports Study looked at what actions connected to politics should (not) be allowed at sports. Political statements in sportsOf all the ways that players might share political sentiments during a sports event that we asked about, Britons are most strongly opposed to athletes chanting political slogans, with 74% against it and only 15% supporting such actions.

    As part of our Big Surveys project, YouGov recently conducted an in-depth study on sports, exploring Britons' attitudes and behaviours towards sports-related topics, from participation levels to political expressions within the arena. We looked at the attitudes and opinions of Britons on sport: from how interested they are in sport and how often they take part in sports, to whether they have watched a live sports event.

    The first part of the YouGov Sports Study examines the nation’s sporting habits and current trends. While there is strong interest in sport among the British public, there is a significant difference in the levels of interest among men and women. Sport is a big thing in the UK – 82% think being an athlete is a respectable career, while half of Britons report that they are very or somewhat interested in sports (53%). On the opposite end are a quarter (24%) who are not interested in all.
