The University and the Students’ Union have jointly won the “Outstanding Support for Students” award at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards ceremony, hosted in Birmingham. The criteria for this award stated it would be given to the institution with a programme that “helps students to gain the maximum benefit from their study”.

Parliament has announced that it will investigate whether universities are reliant on the funding of international students. The investigation is being led by the cross-bench education select committee, chaired by Robin Walker MP, the conservative MP for Worcester. The enquiry will also look into how this reliance might be affected by recent changes the government is introducing and planning to introduce to immigration rules.

After 14 years at the helm of the University of Manchester, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell is stepping down as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester. Duncan Ivison has been chosen as her replacement by the University board of governors. While it may appear that a Vice-Chancellor is not the most senior role in the University, in practice this is not the case.

Manchester Leftist Action have announced on their social media that they have occupied the Roscoe building with other Pro-Palestine groups. This occupation comes after the 3-day Simon Building occupation on March 19-22. This action is part of a continuing campaign against the University to cut all ties with Israel.

Students from several student action groups have occupied the Simon Building in protest of ‘complicity in Palestinian genocide’, as of the afternoon of Tuesday 21. Manchester Leftist action, along with Rent Strike and YFFP, are demanding an end to the University of Manchester’s alleged ties to arms companies and Israeli Universities during the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

In the ever faster landslide of very questionable government decisions, a plan to raise the wage threshold for family visa qualification to £38,000 was announced in December. According to the Office for National Statistics, the median salary in the UK, as of April 2023, was £34,963 a year. This means just over half the country will not be able to bring a foreign spouse to the UK once the new rules come into effect. Marrying a foreigner just became a privilege exclusively for the rich.

On Saturday, February 10, protestors from the group Students Against Tyranny were met by counter-protestors at University Green. Students Against Tyranny arrived at 1pm.. Counter-protestors from Manchester Leftist Action and the Socialist Worker Student Society, who had assembled in Brunswick Park at 12pm, met the group there. There was heavy police presence on campus and at the protest in order to manage crowds.

A new UCU report has found that around two-thirds (66%) of research staff employed by British universities are on fixed-term contracts. The so-called “gig-economy”contracts are sometimes less than a year in length. The report is based on freedom of information (FOI) requests made to 103 British universities, including the University of Manchester.

Professor Duncan Ivison, formerly of the University of Sydney, has been appointed as the next President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, starting on 1 August 2024. Ivison will join Manchester from the University of Sydney, where he was most recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor and a Professor of Political Philosophy. This comes after Dame Nancy Rothwell, the current Vice-Chancellor announced she was stepping down in March of 2023.
