A bill to remove exceptions on Arkansas's slavery ban has died in committee, Rep. Jay Richardson, the bill's sponsor, told 40/29 News. The House State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee ranked other amendments ahead of his to potentially go on a ballot for voters. House Bill 1002 would have amended the Arkansas Constitution to repeal the exception to the prohibition of slavery and involuntary servitude. The constitution allows the acts if they are punishment for a crime.

A former Cave Springs pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault in Washington County. Adam Maass was an endocrinologist. Maass was sentenced to 12 years of supervised probation. He also can’t seek another medical license, and he has until April 25thto give up the one he has. Police say the assaults happened from 2020-2022. Maass previously took a plea deal to get his sexual assault charges in Benton County dropped.

There’s language in the Arkansas Constitution that has exceptions for slavery or involuntary servitude, but a bill recently filed in the Arkansas House is looking to erase that. House Bill 1002 would amend the Arkansas Constitution to repeal the exception to the prohibition of slavery and involuntary servitude.
