BALLARAT’s Kilderkin Distillery has been awarded three medals at this year’s London Spirits Competition. The distillery won a gold medal for its Larrikin’s Grin Old Tom Gin and silver medals for both its Larrikin Raspberry Drop Gin and its Goldfields Single Malt Whisky in the international competition. This is the third consecutive year Kilderkin’s gins have been recognised at the competition, although it is the first time the single malt whisky has earned an international medal.

MOORABOOL Shire Council staff are celebrating Volunteer Week later this month and they are inviting the community to join them. National Volunteer Week runs from Monday 19 to Sunday 25 May and highlights the role of volunteers within communities. A free barbecue lunch with scones from the Country Women’s Association and live music from BaccBeat Jazz Band will be held on Friday 23 May from 11.30am to 1pm. It will take place at the Bacchus Marsh Green.

Arch of Victory/Avenue of Honour committee president Garry Snowden encouraged the community to reflect on the experiences of mothers and families during conflict.

COMMUNITY members are invited to celebrate fifty years of the Woady Yaloak Kindergarten next week. The Scarsdale kindergarten is managed by the Eureka Community Kindergarten Association and the celebrations will take place on Tuesday 13 May from 3.30pm to 5pm. There will be a coffee van, historic photographs, and cupcakes, and a time capsule buried in 2010 will be opened at 4pm.

MILITARY historian Neil Leckie will be at Lerderdeg Library later this month to discuss the history of the Bacchus Marsh ‘Army’ from 1858 to 1921 and beyond. The BacchChat will focus on the heritage of the military in Bacchus Marsh, including key events and figures and its connections to Ballarat. Mr Leckie will also demonstrate how to research family members’ war service records. “If you don’t learn from history, you will make the same mistakes,” he said.

TOMORROW will see the return of the free Anderson’s Mill Heritage Weekend which showcases the site’s more-than 150-year history. Across Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May there will be live demonstrations of weaving, embroidery, blacksmiths and more, and members of Bendigo Amateur Radio Club will be contacting mills in the United Kingdom. Cheryl Just, president of Anderson’s Mill Heritage Weekend Incorporated said the event has a relaxing atmosphere and it is a great way to discover the past.

MOORABOOL Shire Council staff are inviting the community to join them at the Ballan Council Office to acknowledge IDAHOBIT Day. IDAHOBIT is held annually on 17 May, the date in 1990 that homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organisation classification of diseases. Local residents are encouraged to stand against discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

AT last week’s ordinary council meeting, councillors received a petition regarding funding for BREAZE which will be referred to the CEO for a response. The environmental group were stripped of $285,000 in funding for the Electrify Your Home project following alleged anti-Semitic social media content by the organisation’s former president. The petition, which contained 268 signatories, called for the City of Ballarat to resolve the issue with transparency and urgency by restoring the funding.

THE City of Ballarat has partnered with arts organisation Punctum to provide a regional live arts and contemporary performance residency program. Seedpod residencies will help artists create new performances that celebrate Ballarat and this year’s creatives are Izzy Roberts-Orr and Gemma Cavoli. At the end of their residency, the artists share their work and mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the program is another example of the City of Ballarat supporting local creatives.
