INTRODUCTION β-Alanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid found in all living organisms. In plants and microbes, β-alanine is the precursor of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). Pantothenic acid is in turn the precursor of coenzyme A, a cofactor required by many metabolic enzymes (White et al., 2001).
