Bangladesh's fast-bowling coach Shaun Tait feels that his seamers could not make the best use of the first new ball against Sri Lanka on the third day of the Galle Test. After Bangladesh finished their first innings on 495, Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana opened the bowling but couldn't make a breakthrough. Mahmud bowled six overs with the new ball and Rana seven in two short spells as Bangladesh had a fast bowler operating from one end till the 20th over.

A batting collapse hastened Bangladesh's first innings towards its end in the Galle Test but the visitors will be more than happy to take 484 for 9 to start their new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Bangladesh are trying to get out of a long batting slump, so runs from three of their main batters were a welcome sight. Their top six averaged only 24.38 during the 2023-25 WTC cycle, contributing heavily to the team's indifferent form in the last two years.

What could Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim have wished for after enduring a fairly long time without Test centuries? Couple of helpful pitches in Sylhet and Chattogram, perhaps. But those had come and gone. Under pressure, Shanto and Mushfiqur broke free from their barren run on Tuesday on a Galle pitch that allowed them to play freely yet kept them honest to the fact that they couldn't just play their shots freely.

Bangladesh batters are eager to cash in on the Galle pitch before it starts responding to spinners, according to captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. The visitors begin their Sri Lanka tour with the Galle Test starting on Tuesday, with recent performances putting both batting units under pressure. Shanto had scored his maiden Test century in the first game during Bangladesh's tour of Sri Lanka in 2021 - he scored 163 in Pallekele, which remains his highest Test score.

Bangladesh men's cricket has been on a downward trajectory, having won just two matches in the first six months of 2025. They travel next to Sri Lanka, for a multi-format series with question marks over their batters. Najmul Hossain Shanto is no longer first choice in T20Is, Litton Das has lost his place in ODIs, Mehidy Hasan Miraz is not a T20I regular, Mushfiqur Rahim only plays Tests, and Mahmudullah has retired from all formats.
