Confession: I didn’t happily jump into the pickleball world. As a tennis player, it just didn’t speak to me. So I missed those early years, pre and during pandemic, when everyone was picking it up, when courts were open to all, no matter the level and when everyone was learning together. I got behind the pickleball, so to speak. When I realized that most of my friends were playing, I knew for the sake of my social life and sanity, I was going to have give it a try.

When you’re a super influential golf writer, you get to do cool things. That’s how I found myself on a driving range with David Leadbetter, the internationally acclaimed golf coach who has guided students to 26 major titles and an additional 100 tourneys worldwide. No need for eye-rolls: I jest. Not that I wasn’t there with Leadbetter’s total focus on my swing and my game; that really happened. Rather, this wasn’t only for the connected.

If you’re lucky enough to own a boat, you know the sheer joy of getting out on the water around Massachusetts. Not blessed with a boat? There’s still good news. We have a bevy of ways to get out on the ocean and enjoy it.

Twas a time when women had to carve out their spot in the golf world; when men ruled the fairways with men-only dedicated times, private clubs that forbade women as members on their own and of course: the notion that ladies are just out there socializing; that the skill required to play golf well is something men are born with but women not so much.

The sun is rising over Nantucket Harbor and I’m out on my deck rocking chair watching the seaport awaken. The sky shows off shades of orange with pops of blue. Since it’s early May, the slips are pretty much empty and the harbor is quiet other than some working fishermen and a few early-morning walkers. Soon, the first ferry of the day will pull in, moving the water beneath my dockside cottage; its approaching and departing rumble has already become like a clock’s chime for me.
