On Wednesday night, when I finally cast my ballot after two hours in the snaking queue, during a cold night, I felt great to be a South African. Well, unlike the voter who complained on social media for marking his three Xs at 5am, the morning after the day of the polls, I cast mine at 10pm – an hour after the official cut-off time. And I am not complaining. It was of my making.

I am a big music fan but country music does not feature a great deal in my personal repertoire. In fact, it is zilch, if we discount the popular Dolly Parton or Kenny Rodgers – when played by someone else or are on the radio. And Beyoncé? When you watch any professional football match in our country, you can’t help but notice the dearth of white and Indian players. That was never used to be the case – and I think our country so needs that, if only to entrench the social cohesion that many people would like to see happen. This afternoon, the Soweto derby – the biggest match in our football calendar, second only to the Cairo derby between Al Ahly and arch enemies Zamalek – is on at FNB Stadium.

In July 2020, Rolling Stone magazine published its 50 Greatest Bassists of All Time – and at a healthy 44 was South Africa’s own Joseph Makwela. This is the man who, with another innovator, guitarist Marks “Shaluza Max” Mankwane, are the pioneers of mbaqanga. On Tuesday, “Bra Joe” or “Mavuthela”, plucked his last cord aged 83 in Soweto, after an illness. Mbaqanga is a lively, come -and-dance music genre born in the 1960s during the dark days of apartheid.
