It was shocking, although perhaps it shouldn’t have been, to watch someone on his way to likely confirmation who has been dogged by so many moral and ethical concerns, from reports of his excessive drinking to his questionable nonprofit management to allegations about sexual misconduct.

In order to catapult himself back to the White House, Donald Trump has grown his Make America Great Again party into a very big tent. That tent includes many uncomfortable alliances, like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the oil companies he used to fight when he was an environmental lawyer. But perhaps the most tenuous of bedfellows are right-wing techno-oligarchs like Elon Musk and populist nationalists like Steve Bannon, who want to do away with Big Tech’s undue influence over government.

Like it or not, Donald Trump is about to be president again. And given his first tumultuous term in office, we can expect a good deal of chaos and confusion to follow. Much of that daily drama from January 2017–2021 was a result of Trump’s short attention span, which led to dizzyingly fast news cycles as journalists tried parsing the president’s bombastic declarations and (many false) claims to get at what was actually happening in government.

During Donald Trump’s first term, courts provided a necessary check on his ambitions by blocking many of his deregulation efforts, on issues ranging from the environment to immigration, along with his initial version of a travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries. Even the Supreme Court, which has empowered Trump in a number of ways, prevented him from dismantling DACA.
