Joe Biden’s farewell speech was stark, dark, and unlike anything I’ve seen in my lifetime from an outgoing President. Most of all, it was correct. Even in my Republican days, I never doubted Biden’s love of the country and the people who make it such a marvel. This speech will go down as a stark, urgent warning from a man who lived a life of public service and who gave the nation he loves a final warning we’d be wise to heed.

Imagine a country perched on the edge of a political cliff, trembling in the shadow of an authoritarian leader. Elected officials, business elites, and even everyday citizens know they’re dealing with a dangerous man who does not respect democratic norms, the rule of law, or basic human decency. He wants others like him by his side—deficient, broken people—the cruel, sadistic, ugly, and jealous.

Yesterday, Simon Heffer’s piece in The Telegraph nailed it: Milton’s Paradise Lost reads like a grim prophecy for our current era of authoritarianism and right-wing spectacle. I promise, this isn’t too much of a classics rabbit hole. Inspired, I dusted off my old, heavily annotated copy and dove back in. The pages hadn’t seen the light of day in 3 decades. It’s a bit of a slog for modern readers—Milton wasn’t writing for a TikTok audience—but the timeless truths cut through like a knife.

As I was writing something quite different, Matt Gaetz went down in flames. It’s a disaster for Donald Trump…the first of many and a crack in the bullshit armor of his phony tough guy image. The real humiliation here isn’t just that Gaetz didn’t get confirmed. Frankly, Matt’s chances for an affirmative Senate vote were on life support the moment Trump blurted out his name on Truth Social, the Rodong Sinmun of MAGAland.

My wife and I have spent the last week potty training our son. Anyone who has been through this knows what’s involved: reading and rereading “Elmo Learns to Use the Potty,” effusive praise for successful trips to the toilet and lots of M&Ms as a reward. As every parent knows, the most effective strategy to train a toddler is to cajole them to do the right thing and heap on the praise; it’s prettied-up manipulation. Democrats should adopt the same approach with President-elect Donald Trump.

If you’re a GOP Senator, few nominations in your career will carry the historical weight—or the stench—of Matt Gaetz, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Pete Hegseth, and Tulsi Gabbard. Once the master of the Senate, Mitch McConnell has been reduced to a bitter old man muttering ineffectually about “no recess appointments” in a last, sad burble before he drowns in the toxic legacy he so carefully curated.

With Donald Trump headed back to the White House, abortion-rights advocates are afraid. People who rely on IVF or contraceptives have reason to be scared, too. However much the president-elect downplayed abortion on the campaign trail because of fears that it might cost him support with women or independents, he will soon have the power to reshape the judicial landscape to diminish access not just to abortion, but to IVF and contraception as well for years to come.
