Joe Biden’s farewell speech was stark, dark, and unlike anything I’ve seen in my lifetime from an outgoing President. Most of all, it was correct. Even in my Republican days, I never doubted Biden’s love of the country and the people who make it such a marvel. This speech will go down as a stark, urgent warning from a man who lived a life of public service and who gave the nation he loves a final warning we’d be wise to heed.

Imagine a country perched on the edge of a political cliff, trembling in the shadow of an authoritarian leader. Elected officials, business elites, and even everyday citizens know they’re dealing with a dangerous man who does not respect democratic norms, the rule of law, or basic human decency. He wants others like him by his side—deficient, broken people—the cruel, sadistic, ugly, and jealous.

Yesterday, Simon Heffer’s piece in The Telegraph nailed it: Milton’s Paradise Lost reads like a grim prophecy for our current era of authoritarianism and right-wing spectacle. I promise, this isn’t too much of a classics rabbit hole. Inspired, I dusted off my old, heavily annotated copy and dove back in. The pages hadn’t seen the light of day in 3 decades. It’s a bit of a slog for modern readers—Milton wasn’t writing for a TikTok audience—but the timeless truths cut through like a knife.
