    VE DAY 2025 celebrates 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe. Below are some of the events that took place in South Somerset on Thursday, May 8, 2025, to commemorate this historic occasion. Ilminster Town Council along with Ilminster residents celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with four special events. In preparation, shops decorated their windows, large banners were hung up and local legend Bob Bright was seen wearing Union Jack flags.

William Chalkley, 40, of Court Barton, Crewkerne, was jailed yesterday (Thursday, May 8) at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse, after he was unanimously found guilty following a trial in March.

A large agricultural fire, involving a barn in Hinton St George, near Crewkerne, that occurred early in the morning of May 5 resulted in crews from Ilminster, Martock, Crewkerne, Chard and Yeovil rushing to the scene.

At approximately 8.30am on May 8, Frome Community College received a call from an unknown person stating that there was a bomb somewhere on their site.
