We are in the last days leading up to the presidential election of 2024. Nov. 5 can’t come soon enough for me. Finally, the text messages and emails from candidates all over the United States will end Tuesday night and I won’t have to respond “STOP” to text messages from the political parties and their candidates. I’m one of the millions who already have voted early, either in person or by absentee ballot.

Fear of failure, fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of bugs, whatever you fear can be paralyzing. Most of us do nothing rather than confront our fear. Instead, we should probe why we are afraid and then act to overcome that fear. As British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said, “Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision.”Some of us fear what will happen in the future and that fear can be used by others to control us — physically, emotionally and psychologically.

“All work is good work as long as it is honest work.” That was one of my late mother’s favorite statements. She hated the words used to differentiate and describe working people. There was “blue collar” and “white collar,” and I can’t imagine how she would react to “pink collar.”The designations referred to the color of the shirt collars of workers. Blue collar was introduced in the 1920s to describe people who were considered manual laborers.

Words hold a lot of weight. As a writer, I aim to be a wordsmith on paper and when I speak. It is so easy to say what we think, before we think about what we really should say. No one appears to think about the repercussions of their words anymore. Who is to blame? Is it social media and its anonymity that allows us to blurt out how we feel about everything and anything? I don’t have an answer, I just feel like civility has become a thing of the past.
