At the entrance to the museum, there are two ping-pong tables assembled in the shape of an X (four separate pieces in total), with a small water garden jutting out from the central square, representing a net. It’s ready to be played on. This is a revision of one of Gabriel Orozco’s canonical works — Ping Pong Table (1998) — that propelled him to the top of the international art scene.

In communist Prague, Kafka was banned. Something similar happened in the Soviet Union and other totalitarian countries, so their citizens were not able to read Franz Kafka. The political authorities of those countries were aware that the author’s portrayal of totalitarianism was so accurate and lucid that any reader would recognize it as a hyperbole of the political system in which he lived.

En la Praga comunista Kafka estaba prohibido. Algo parecido pasaba en la Unión Soviética y otros países totalitarios, de modo que sus ciudadanos no habían podido leer a Franz Kafka. I enter the Thyssen Museum in Madrid to see the exhibition of works by Gabriele Münter (1877-1962). One of the great female painters of German expressionism, she’s finally being properly recognized alongside her male counterparts. From the first paintings I see, such as Breakfast of the Birds (1934), I’m reminded of the house where Gabriele lived with Wassily Kandinsky, in the German village of Murnau, which I visited last winter.

Entro en el Museo Thyssen de Madrid para ver la exposición de Gabriele Münter. Una de las grandes pintoras del expresionismo alemán, que por fin se sitúa en pie de igualdad con sus compañeros masculinos. Ya desde los primeros cuadros que observo, como El desayuno de los pájaros, acude a mí el recuerdo de la casa donde Gabriele vivió con Vasili Kandinsky, en el pueblo de Murnau, que visité en el invierno del año pasado. Kandinsky fue su maestro de pintura y se convirtió en su pareja sentimental.
