News Brief Wednesday February 26, 2025 12:30 pm Peggy Carr, the federal official who supervises the National Assessment of Educational Progress, (NAEP) often called the nation’s report card, was placed on administrative leave by the Trump administration Monday. This move comes on the heels of the elimination of millions of dollars of projects at the U.S. Department of Education’s research arm, EdWeek reported.

But the political right has fixed its gaze on LGBTQ issues in schools. The reason for this shift is obvious: Anti-LGBTQ animus is still socially acceptable. Following this shift, there has been a sharp uptick in anti-LGBTQ legislation nationwide. Even in deep blue California, school boards have recently passed parental notification policies that require school district staff to inform parents if their children are transgender.
