DeLand Police to undergo specialized training by ICE

Orange City summer camp moves to Valentine Park

BY MORGAN RYANThe Orange City branch of the Volusia County Parks and Recreation summer camp is changing locations — the program will now take place at Valentine Park. The camp, which typically hosts around 60 children ages 5 through 12, has historically been located at Orange City Elementary School. Due to ongoing construction at the school, the Orange City Council made the decision to allow Volusia County Parks and Rec to utilize the park’s clubhouse, pavilion and sports fields instead.

Mayor Cloudman proclaims Encephalitis Awareness Day in DeLand

BY MORGAN RYANThe City of DeLand will now recognize Encephalitis Awareness Day, as proclaimed by Mayor Chris Cloudman in a City Commission meeting Feb. 17. Encephalitis is a rare neurological disease that causes inflammation in the brain. In the United States, it is contracted most commonly from a bite from an infected mosquito. An average of 11 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Orange City eliminates sponsorship program for community groups

The council made the controversial decision at a meeting on Feb. 11 after much deliberation and outcry from the community.
Harold Grimm appointed as vice mayor of Orange City

BY MORGAN RYANThe Orange City Council elected Council Member Harold Grimm to the vice mayor position at a meeting on Feb. 11. The seat was previously held by Alex Tiamson, until his passing in December 2024. Grimm won by a 4-3 vote against District 2 representative Lisa Stafford. Grimm was nominated by Dawn Tiamson, District 3 representative and wife of the late vice mayor. Grimm has served on the Orange City Council as the District 1 representative since February 2024.

The position was held by Alex Tiamson, who also served as vice mayor, until his passing on Dec. 29, 2024. The City Council held a special meeting Feb. 3 to vote on the candidate to fill the position. After a series of interviews and discussion, the council unanimously voted to appoint Dawn Tiamson. Tiamson, wife of the late vice mayor, sought out the position to honor her husband and her city.
New mass notification system for Orange City

City council members decided on Jan. 14 to move forward with Everbridge, a mass notification system used by Volusia County and several cities surrounding Orange City, including DeLand and South Daytona. The city will be able to contact users via text, phone call and email, as well as provide social media updates.

The recent vacancy of the position follows the death of Alex Tiamson, who also served as the vice mayor of Orange City. Applications for the position opened on Jan. 15 and will close on Jan. 29. At a special meeting on Feb. 3, Orange City representatives will conduct interviews of potential candidates. The Orange City council will make a final vote to decide the winner at their meeting on Feb. 11.
Orange City elects first female mayor, majority female council

By MORGAN RYANCitizens of Orange City made history this election cycle by electing Kelli Marks as the first female mayor in the city’s history. She was inducted into office Nov. 19 following a landslide victory against opponent Laurie Scotton. Marks received 65.2 percent, or 3,966 votes, to Scotton’s 34.8 percent or 2,117 votes. Before her mayoral run, Marks served as the District 4 representative for six years. She will replace Gary A.
