The Martin Luther King Jr. Center continues to see improvements with the reopening of its tennis courts on Monday. The center, at 313 Greenhaven Drive NW in Lenoir, reopened to the community in mid-April after closing for about a month for renovations that included the installation of a new floor. But one renovation was not yet complete and remained closed when the center reopened - the tennis courts.

Caldwell County Schools recently celebrated its 2025 employees of the year during a ceremony in April. From teachers to principals to bus drivers and volunteers, all those making an impact on students’ lives each and every day were recognized. Valmead Elementary School’s Melissa Stutts was named the Teacher of the Year. According to CCS, Stutts describes herself as passionate, inquisitive and reflective, and she works to instill these same qualities in her students.

The Caldwell County Farmers Market opens for the season Saturday. The farmers market, which is located at 308 Blowing Rock Blvd. in Lenoir, will be open every Saturday until Oct. 25 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.Carla McGinnis, Caldwell County Farmers Market manager, said they’re excited to welcome both returning and new faces this year, including new vendors.

Gov. Josh Stein extended the State of Emergency on Saturday for 34 counties being impacted by wildfires in western North Carolina, Caldwell County being one of them. The extension will last for a period of 30 days. “I appreciate all of the first responders, emergency managers, state forest rangers, and state and local officials working hard to protect North Carolinians from wildfires,” Stein said.

The town of Sawmills' Spring in the Park festival is less than two weeks away, and this year's event is sure to have something for everyone in the family to enjoy. More than 100 local vendors will be set up at Baird Park, at 4064 Baird Drive in Sawmills, on May 10, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.There will also be food trucks, live music from Phillip Page and System 3, a dance performance by Appalachian Rhythm, a kids' zone, a jeep and car show, and to top it all off, fireworks to end the night.

The city of Lenoir recently dedicated the new teaching pavilion at Unity Park and Community Gardens to the man who was instrumental in developing the park more than 15 years ago. The David R. Horn Education Pavilion was officially opened and dedicated on April 19 during the city’s Earth Day and Arbor Day Celebration. “We are so excited that we are going to dedicate this pavilion to the man who put this whole thing together,” said Mayor Joseph Gibbons.
