The Daily News is a newspaper that comes out every day in Jacksonville, North Carolina. It has been providing news to the residents of Jacksonville, Onslow County, and nearby regions since 1953. Originally owned by Freedom Communications, the paper changed hands in 2012 when Freedom sold its newspapers in Florida and North Carolina to Halifax Media Group. Then, in 2015, Halifax was bought by New Media Investment Group.

An eastern North Carolina author will be holding a book signing on Saturday at the Jacksonville Barnes and Noble for his newest title, "Tar Heel Bred: How Basketball Made A Man Out of Me."Scott Whisnant grew up in Jamestown, just outside of Greensboro, during the same time legendary coach Dean Smith began growing the basketball program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. So, it was easy to grow up a Tar Heel fan.

Pollocksville man charged in fatal hit-and-run

A Pollocksville man was arrested and charged in the vehicle fatal hit-and-run that killed a Jacksonville man on Old Maplehurst Road in February. Robert Allen Riggs, of Pollocksville, was arrested on March 24 and charged with felony hit and run causing death and misdemeanor death by vehicle, among other charges, said 1st Sgt. John Edwards, with the N.C. Highway Patrol, on Monday. Authorities have been searching for the suspect after the fatal hit-and-run took place on Feb. 28.
