Preah Sihanouk provincial officials said Thursday that authorities had demolished a fence built directly on O’Chheuteal beach overnight after social media criticism and news reports. Deputy governor Long Dimanche said that authorities received approval from Prime Minister Hun Sen to compromise with the owner of the land on the beach and destroy the fence Wednesday evening. Whether or not authorities would move to take back the land under state control, Dimanche said, had yet to be decided.

Provincial and local authorities couldn’t answer questions of who owns the home behind the fence, which now runs along a section of the popular tourist beach just a dozen meters from the water.

Prominent unionist Rong Chhun joined the Candlelight Party on Tuesday, months shy of the national election, saying he expected a “big achievement” for the party in July.
