French cheeses, crumbling soil and an eight foot tall silver linden tree were all on display at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School yesterday evening. The newly planted sapling serves as a symbol to mark a 30-year sister city relationship with Albi, France. The tree-planting ceremony was organized by Neighbors Abroad, a nonprofit organization affiliated with Sisters International and working with Palo Alto since 1963.

California schools will soon be restricting phone use during school hours after Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Phone-Free School Act into law last week. The legislation requires school districts across the state to restrict cell phone use, starting July 1, 2026. According to a press release from the governor’s website, Newsom said the policy aims to redirect students’ focus from their phones to schoolwork.

Across grade levels, students bring a diversity of interests to Palo Alto High School, ranging from areas of business, religion, and mental health. During Club Day, which took place Thursday and Friday on the Quad, students were able to find communities that featured their niche passions. According to freshman Eileen Lee, joining clubs lends the opportunity to build new friendships and make lasting connections. “I’m looking forward to hanging out with some of my friends at their booths,” Lee said.

Attendees are praising the Back-to-School Night activities this evening on the Quad, following the second year of Palo Alto High School’s Parent Fair. Amid music and food, the evening began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the official opening of the new Tower Building, after over two years of construction. Tables and booths were spread across the Quad, providing information on Paly organizations such as the Early Child Development pathway, Speech and Debate Club and AP Capstone program.

Llew Ladomirak, a junior on the Palo Alto High School varsity swim team, has done it, winning both her 200 and 500 freestyle at Central Coast Section earlier this month at Independence High School. Her teammates dive into the water in celebration, chanting “Sko-Vikes” with their coach.

History may be boring to many, but never in Jack Bungarden’s AP US History class at Palo Alto High School. Bungarden — who is retiring after 23 years of teaching at Paly and finishing his last class today — is known for his distinct style of teaching, from referencing sports analogies in the middle of history lectures to blasting Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” song on loop before unit tests.
