The aroma of pho, tacos and gyros wafts from food trucks as people of various ages gather outside the Lucie Stern Community Center, drawn in by colorful booths and vibrant traditional outfits awaiting inside. Yesterday, Palo Alto’s Community Services Department kicked off its first-ever Around the World in a Day Festival, celebrating the city’s diverse cultures.

Palo Alto Unified School District board member Rowena Chiu received condemnation and calls to resign from the Palo Alto Management Association and former PAUSD trustees after she reposted and commented on an X post on Monday. PAMA released a document stating: “Given the gravity of Ms. Chiu’s actions and the harm they caused, we demand her immediate resignation from the PAUSD Board of Education.” Another statement, a letter signed by 14 former PAUSD board trustees, also criticized Chiu’s actions.

School issues all-clear after lockdown

Students and staff are back in classes after swatting threats prompted a lockdown at Palo Alto High School on Tuesday morning. The school-wide lockdown was initially announced at 11:34 a.m., with a follow-up announcement lifting the shelter-in-place at 11:50 a.m.According to an X post from the Palo Alto Police Department, officers were on scene at both Paly and Gunn High School to investigate threats to both school campuses.

International film festival seeks to inspire younger generation

The United Nations Association Film Festival is hosting its 27th annual event with opportunities for student volunteers who are interested in film and human rights throughout this week. The screenings will primarily take place at Mitchell Park, but other locations such as Stanford’s Medical Center and Stanford’s Green Library will also have screenings until Saturday. Being the oldest documentary film festival in the US, this year’s UNAFF, called ‘Shared Humanity,’ will last for 11 days.
Football player forges path for future female athletes

What does it take to break the status quo? Palo Alto High School junior Lara Saslow knows. As the only female football player on the Viking football team, she defies the stereotypes. According to Saslow, being the only girl in a male-dominated sport introduced a lot of nerves her freshman year. “I was so nervous for every single day I would suit up for practice,” Saslow said. “I felt that I represented all women and can’t let them down in a sense.
