Introduction Hydrogen (H2) has been considered as one of the most promising renewable energy sources. However, hydrogen has the lowest density among all gases, which requires very high pressure (ca. 700 bar) for compression and extremely low temperature (−253 °C) for liquefaction.1 In addition, H2 also has a comparatively broad explosive range when mixed with air (4–75 %). Therefore, it is challenging to store and transport H2 safely and cost-effectively in large commercial quantities.
