ECONOMIC GROWTH IN Ireland surged in the first quarter of this year, as the threat of US tariffs on technology and pharmaceuticals saw exports boom. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which measures the strength and performance of the Irish economy based on the output of domestic and multinational companies in Ireland, increased by nearly 10% in the first three months of this year.

NURSING HOMES REGULATOR HIQA carried out additional inspections at two care facilities featured in an RTÉ Investigates programme as a result of previous non-compliance orders, the authority has said. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) said it is “very concerned” over the “distressing” scenes pictured in RTÉ Investigate’s programme into two privately-owned care facilities in Co Dublin and Co Laois.

AN ONLINE POST by the organisers behind the Mayo Pride parade, depicting a parody of the ‘Child of Prague’, was removed after a number of abusive comments were made in response to the joke. The Child of Prague statue is a religious icon associated with luck and good weather, particularly during Irish weddings. Traditionally, it’s left out on the night before a wedding to ensure fine weather on the big day.

A CYCLIST HAS died after he was struck by a van on the N25 in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork this evening. Gardaí attended the scene of what a spokesperson described as a “serious” road traffic collision this evening. The pedal cyclist, a man aged in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has since been removed to the mortuary at University Cork Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

DETECTIVES AND GARDAÍ involved in the investigation into the disappearance and death of Cork woman Tina Satchwell have been commended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin. A judge today sentenced Richard Satchwell to life in prison for the murder of his wife Tina in 2017. A trial heard that he first reported her missing in March 2017. Her body was subsequently discovered by gardaí under the stairs in their home by gardaí in October 2023.
