    TAOISEACH MICHEÁL MARTIN has called for a review of HIQA’s regulatory framework after an RTÉ Investigates programme highlighted poor treatment and practice within two privately-owned care homes. Both care facilities – The Residence Portlaoise and Beneavin Manor in Glasnevin – are under the ownership of Emeis Ireland, formerly known as Orpea. Emeis operates 27 nursing homes across the country after entering the Irish market in 2022.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) today published its findings on how the Irish public spent last summer. Some 3,916 were surveyed on how they spent time in nature during June, July, and August last year.

    A TEENAGER HAS died following a single-vehicle collision last night in Co Kildare. The collision, involving a pick-up truck, occurred shortly after 8pm on the Barrettstown Road in Newbridge. The passenger, a man in his late teens, was taken to Naas General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The Coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

    SWIMMING HAS BEEN banned for the entirety of the bathing season at Sandymount Strand, while a temporary ban is in place at Dollymount Strand. This year’s bathing season runs from 1 June to 15 September. A swimming restriction is in place at Sandymount Strand for the entirety of the bathing season due to poor water quality. The water has been deemed to be poor based on 2021-2024 bathing assessments and as a result, a restriction has been imposed to prevent bathers from exposure to pollution.

    THE HIGH COURT has ordered that three wind turbines in Co Wexford be totally shut down due to noise nuisance. It’s understood to be the first time that a court in Ireland has ordered the total shutdown of a wind turbine. Raymond Byrne and Lorna Moorhead live around a kilometre from the nearest turbine of the six-turbine Gibbet Hill Wind Farm near Bunclody in Co Wexford. Four of the turbines are near the summit of Gibbet Hill, with two located at the sub-peak.
