Last week, I attended a journalism conference in Chicago for newsroom leaders wrestling with the potential of artificial intelligence. This Joyce Foundation gathering was my last conference representing Sahan Journal as its CEO and publisher. Not to bury the lede, but today, September 3, I’ll be stepping aside and welcoming a new executive director for our amazing nonprofit news organization.

By Katie DohmanThe Victory Ramp in downtown St. Paul is a gritty concrete spiral, bookended with tollbooths to monitor comings and goings. In the early 2000s, Mukhtar Ibrahim was often the gatekeeper. Located behind the St. Paul Pioneer Press’ former headquarters on Cedar St., he saw staffers buzzing in and out every day. It meant a newspaper was always available, and he read to pass the time. “The paper was so thick then,” Ibrahim says, his voice tinged with nostalgia.

Mukhtar Ibrahim is the founding publisher and CEO of Sahan Journal. He previously worked as a staff writer for the Star Tribune and Minnesota Public Radio News. He has also written for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Al Jazeera English, BuzzFeed News and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism. Mukhtar is among the first of his generation's professional, accomplished journalists of Somali background in Minnesota and in the country.
