A hefty amount of prop blood. More than a dozen choreographed fight scenes. And a hip hop track to pull it all together. Theater Mu’s largest production to date, The Kung Fu Zombies Saga: Shaman Warrior & Cannibals, runs through August 13 at the Luminary Arts Center, in Minneapolis. Theater Mu will also be streaming the production on its website and hosting a history panel discussion after the matinee show on August 12, as a part of Southeast Asian Diaspora Weekend in the Twin Cities.

Growing up a Somali girl in Minneapolis' Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, Muna Mohamed developed an uncommon passion for basketball. Playing in high school, she wore long-sleeved shirts under her jersey and wrapped her hijab so it wouldn't flow too much. Even so, some referees deemed it a safety hazard. When she went on to coach in her neighborhood, she noticed that some of her players grew frustrated with their hijabs falling off and interfering with their game.

Growing up as a Somali girl in Minneapolis’ Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, Muna Mohamed took on an uncommon passion for basketball. While it isn’t unusual to see East African women shooting hoops today, Muna spent many years as the only girl on the court, holding her own against the boys. Years later, when her family moved to South St. Paul, Muna joined her school’s basketball team. She pursued her love of the sport all the way to playing semi-professional ball with the TC Elite.

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan’s “One Minnesota” budget proposal seeks to allocate millions of dollars towards combating opioid addiction in Minnesota with a focus on culturally specific care. The budget, unveiled in March, proposes dedicating $115 million towards initiatives that will help Minnesotans access help despite their financial hurdles, cultural barriers, or housing issues.

As an artist, Mohamud Mumin has enjoyed much personal success, including winning multiple fellowships for his work in photography. But there were always a couple things missing: Enough opportunities to exhibit at mainstream Twin Cities galleries, and other Somali artists or artists of color to share the experience. So he gravitated toward those with a similar background, eventually teaming up with visual artists Kaamil Haider and Khadija Muse to found the Soomaal House of Art in 2014.
