JBS, the world’s largest meat company, will fail to meet its flagship commitment to eliminate both legal and illegal deforestation in its vast Amazon rainforest supply chain by the end of this year, according to beef producers. Working with the Guardian and Reporter Brasil, Unearthed interviewed more than 35 ranchers and cattle industry representatives over three field trips to the Amazon. Ranchers told us they believe the company’s ambitious environmental pledge is impossible to achieve.

The UK exported 8,500 tonnes of pesticides last year that are banned on British farms because of the dangers they pose to human health and nature, a new investigation by Unearthed and Public Eye has found. The world’s biggest meat company bought cattle more than 100 times from a farm that was sanctioned and fined almost £2m for illegally destroying unique and vulnerable wetlands in Brazil, Unearthed can reveal. Brazilian beef giant JBS, which supplies KFC, McDonalds, Walmart and Tesco, has been repeatedly linked to large-scale Amazon destruction. JBS, the world’s largest meatpacking company, has over the last five years been buying cattle from farms that were caught illegally deforesting Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands despite the company’s claims of environmental responsibility. An Unearthed investigation found that JBS suppliers cleared vast areas of the Pantanal wetlands in the past five years, with Fazenda Querência being the largest deforester, having cleared an area half the size of Paris.
