Residents of the West Port area in Port Charlotte will soon have a new Publix in their neighborhood, part of a wave of development reshaping southern and eastern Charlotte County. During a May 27 land-use meeting, Charlotte County commissioners approved multiple projects, including a new shopping center anchored by Publix and two residential developments by Lennar Homes. Campo Engineering’s final detail site plan was approved for a shopping center to be anchored by the grocery giant.

A proposed 156-unit condominium project near Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club is moving forward after Charlotte County commissioners narrowly approved a land-use change for the development. In a 3-2 vote, the Board of County Commissioners agreed to transmit a rezoning request for 20.33 acres near Lister Street in Port Charlotte. The land lies north of the Peace River, south of Edgewater Drive, west of Bayshore Road and east of Lister Street.

In a near-unanimous vote May 27, Charlotte County commissioners approved three zoning amendments for Benderson Development LLC’s 653-acre property in Port Charlotte, clearing the way for a future Buc-ee’s gas station and convenience store. The planned development, located near Interstate 75 and Harborview Road, will eventually include 3,959 residential units, 655,000 square feet of commercial space, 50,000 square feet of office space and 350 hotel rooms.
