A pill testing site in Canberra has discovered three never-before-seen substances in recreational drugs. CanTEST said researchers identified the new psychoactive ingredients in samples of drugs brought by members of the community for testing. Researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) said the substances are synthetic, meaning they are designed to mimic the effects of “established” drugs like cocaine, heroin, LSD, ketamine, and MDMA.
Syphilis diagnoses more than tripled in a decade

National syphilis diagnoses have more than tripled since 2013, according to a new report on sexually transmitted infections (STIs). UNSW’s Kirby Institute found STI rates have increased over the last ten years despite a dip in testing during the pandemic. A record 153,600 STIs have been reported this year, up from a 2019 peak of 150,600 infections. The data used in the findings does not differentiate sex or gender characteristics beyond ‘male’ and ‘female’.
First transplanted uterus and successful birth in Australia

Kirsty Bryant, 30, has become the first woman in Australia to give birth to a baby from a transplanted uterus. The birth comes 11 months after Bryant’s 53-year-old mother donated her uterus to her daughter following an extensive surgery. The baby, which was carried in the same uterus as Bryant, was born healthy on 15 December. Uterus transplantBryant had her first child, Violet, in 2021. However, she suffered from a major haemorrhage after giving birth.
