ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reiterated its last order to the anti-terrorism courts (ATCs) to conclude May 9 violence trials within four months. Headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, a three-judge SC bench had taken up appeals in cases moved by Punjab prosecutor general to cancel bails or transfer cases of suspects involved in the May 9 incidents. The court dismissed Asad Qaiser’s bail cancellation appeal on the basis of its withdrawal.

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) constituted a five-member committee on Monday to hash out criteria for the appointment of judges, as well as selection of judges, for the Constitutional Benches of the Supreme Court and the four high courts. Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail will be the committee’s chairman. Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan and Senator Farooq Hamid Naek will represent the government while Senator Syed Ali Zafar will represent the opposition.

ISLAMABAD: Senior representative of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Akhtar Hussain on Monday became the first casualty in the wake of controversies related to the judicial appointments when he resigned from the prestigious slot of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP). “I am unable to continue and hereby resign as being member of JCP,” says a one-page resignation letter addressed to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, who is also JCP chairman.
