I won’t say that my mother is my role model because that would be a lie. Our lives have taken very different paths, though perhaps, not always by choice. “I am happy to see you achieve everything I could not,” she told me when she came to visit me in France for the first time. This phrase stuck in my head for a long time. What didn’t she achieve? And why couldn’t she? I began to wonder about her life and, in particular, whether it was she who made the decisions that brought her to where she is today.
