    The Waka Ama Nationals 2025 marks the first nationals without renowned waka ama paddler Kiwi Campbell, who passed away late last year. Campbell, a member of the Horouta Waka Hoe Club in Gisborne, was celebrated for her contribution to the sport as both an elite paddler and coach. Today is the third day of racing, with the intermediate and J16 teams. YMP Waka Ama club paddler David Jones reflects on Kiwi Campbell’s legacy in the sport.

    The tangihanga of Dame Tariana Turia began this morning at Whangaehu Marae. Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer is expected to attend the pōroporoaki when Taranaki arrives this afternoon. Today is reserved for Te Ranga Tupua, an iwi collective representing Ngaa Rauru, Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa, Mōkai Pātea, Ngāti Hauiti, Ngāti Rangi, and Whanganui. On Sunday and Monday the marae will open to the motu to bid farewell to Dame Tariana.

Today is reserved for Te Ranga Tupua, an iwi collective representing Ngaa Rauru, Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa, Mōkai Pātea, Ngāti Hauiti, Ngāti Rangi, and Whanganui. On Sunday and Monday the marae will open to the motu to bid farewell to Dame Tariana. Powhiri will be held at 9am and 2pm on both Sunday and Monday, before the nehu (burial) on Tuesday 7 January at 11am.

    Rangimahora Reddy (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Maniapoto, Waikato, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Rangitāne) is one of the New Year Honours 2025 recipients awarded the King’s Service medal. Reddy is widely recognised for her work at the Rauawaawa Kaumātua Charitable Trust in Hamilton since 2010. The culturally focused charity provides health and wellbeing, housing, welfare, education, and recreational services for kaumātua. She felt overwhelmingly honoured after it was announced she would receive the medal.

    Tohunga toi Fred Graham (Ngāti Korokī Kahukura), who was previously awarded Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2018 New Year’s Honours and the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal, has now been appointed Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Upon the announcement of the news, he thanked those who supported his nomination, though he sadly noted his wife Norma of 67 years, who would usually celebrate with him, had recently passed away.
