Chalise Teira Barton-Barbarich can now be named as the man accused of murdering Turipapa Tukere in Ngāruawāhia last year. The 34-year-old made his second appearance in the High Court in Hamilton this morning. The Hamilton man pleaded not guilty to the charge of murdering Tukere, as well as charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to an alleged second victim. He did not apply for continued name suppression.

Aotearoa’s ongoing whooping cough epidemic has claimed its first life - a pēpi - over the Christmas break. Announced today by Te Whatu Ora, Dr Matt Reid, a Public Health Medicine Specialist at the National Public Health Service called it “one death too many”. “Today we are acknowledging the death of an infant from whooping cough over the Christmas period."“This is the last news any of us wanted."It is the first recorded death since the national epidemic was declared in November.

The deadline for public submissions on the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill has been extended, after persistent technical issues in the final days of the submission period barred many from having their say. The Justice Select Committee, to which the bill has been referred, met this morning to discuss the possibility of an extension. The committee has agreed the deadline will be extended to 1pm Tuesday, January 14, according to a report by Stuff.
