There are close royal ties between Britain and Bahrain, with 37 royal visits to the Middle Eastern country since 1965. The King last visited in 2016 when he was Prince of Wales. In November 2024, the Bahraini King visited the King in Windsor, with a guard of honour and tea at the castle to mark his own silver jubilee. He was also appointed Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

Industry experts put the rise in flight costs down to the debts airlines incurred during the pandemic, along with the spike in the price of jet fuel amid the global energy crisis. As of last week, it was trading at 225 per cent of the 2000 average. A shortage of skilled labour and slow delivery times for new aircraft have also been blamed, following shortages in the supply of key manufacturing components, like semiconductors and finished castings.

A stolen First World War memorial plaque has been discovered in a scrapyard in Essex. Two 100-year-old metal plaques, which contain the names of dozens of soldiers killed in the war, were stolen last Friday from Christ Church Luton, in Chatham, Kent. Jonathan Pout, the head gardener, noticed they had been unbolted from the wall on May 24, prompting fears they were to be sold as scrap metal and could be destroyed.
