Nigeria and South Africa have signed an accord to boost cooperation in mining, Nigeria's mines minister said on Thursday, highlighting Abuja's push to diversify its economy away from oil. Mines Minister Dele Alake said the two countries will partner on mining, including geological mapping using drones, share mineral data, and jointly explore agro and energy minerals in Nigeria. Besides oil, Nigeria is also rich in gold, limestone, lithium, iron-ore and zinc.

ASX-listed BCI Minerals has received a key Commonwealth government approval, paving the way for full-scale operations at its Mardie solar salt and sulphate of potash project in Western Australia. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has approved BCI’s groundwater monitoring and management plan, allowing the company to proceed with filling the remaining operational ponds (Ponds 4 through 9) and to begin commissioning the crystallisers.

Metals exploration and development company Ardea Resources has secured a A$4.6-million strategic investment from Japan’s Sumitomo Metal Mining, further strengthening the partnership between the two companies as they advance the Kalgoorlie nickel project – Goongarrie hub. Sumitomo will subscribe for 10.73-million Ardea shares at A$0.43 apiece – representing a 7.5% premium to the last traded price and a 10% premium to the five-day volume weighted average price (VWAP) as of April 14.

Australia-listed Talga Group’s planned battery anode refinery in Luleå, Sweden, has been designated a net-zero strategic project under the European Union’s (EU's) Net-Zero Industry Act, the company announced on Wednesday. The status was granted by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. The Luleå anode refinery is part of Talga’s vertically integrated Vittangi anode project and is among the first initiatives to receive this classification under the EU’s new industrial framework.

ASX-listed Black Cat Syndicate on Wednesday announced approval to commence underground mining at the Myhree deposit, part of its Kal East gold project near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Underground development is scheduled to begin after the completion of openpit operations in October, subject to operational requirements. The approval marks a milestone in the company’s “more gold sooner” strategy, which aims to accelerate production across the Kal East project.
