When Darl Schaaff, a former Alaskan turned Clevelander, asked himself, “If you wanted to display what your life collected, what would it look like?,” his answer was the Darl Center for the Arts. Over the past few years, Schaaff has rebuilt the former Broadway branch of Cleveland Public Library at 5437 Broadway Ave. to house his personal collection of about 400 pieces of art and artifacts and to display them to the public.

A Slavic Village nonprofit is trying to fill empty storefronts to make their community more vibrant – and they’ve come up with a creative marketing strategy to do it. On Thursday, October 5, Slavic Village Development (SVD) showed off four empty storefronts ready for tenants during a “Lights On” event aimed at filling empty storefronts on Fleet Ave., where about 50 percent of the buildings are vacant.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Meet Grace, University Circle Police Department's community policing dog. On Aug. 5, the University Circle Police Department (UCPD) welcomed a new member to its ranks. Grace, a community policing K-9, was donated to the department by her trainer, Northeast Ohio resident Rick Seyler. Grace is the first dog of her kind to join the department and is one of a few K-9s in Ohio that share a similar purpose.

When John Orlando, CEO of the 120-year-old Orlando Baking Company, looks out of the conference room at his company headquarters on the Opportunity Corridor and sees thousands of cars a day flowing past his front door, he likes what he sees. Before the $322 million, 3.5 mile roadway between East 55th and University Circle was completed in late 2021, he estimated that only a few hundred cars drove past their facility each day. Now, he said, it’s more like 20,000.

At the Cleveland City Planning Commission’s Feb. 17 meeting, the Cleveland Clinic presented plans to build two glassy new research buildings on the northwest and northeast corners of E. 100th St. and Cedar Ave. Commission members challenged the nonprofit hospital to consider how community members will be able to engage with the buildings.

It’s no secret that the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) has been busy building tunnels to combat sewer overflow pollution — seven tunnels in 11 locations along Big Creek, Spring Creek, and Rocky River, to be exact, as part of Project Clean Lake. But what’s not as well-known is the pipeline of jobs NEORSD is steadily creating via its Good Neighbor Ambassador program. First launched in 2013, the Good Neighbor Ambassador program is two-fold.

In September 2022, Ohio City welcomed a new shopping destination to the Hingetown District – City Goods, a collective of 23 local businesses that offer hundreds of locally-made products, share expenses, and manage resources together. “In its simplest form, City Goods is a business model – we take space and let people share it,” said founder and entrepreneur Sam Friedman.
