The Community Journalism program was and is a dream come true for me. I knew that I loved writing, journalism, and Cleveland, but I did not know how to connect the three. When I came across the program, the opportunity for mentorship from wonderful, kind, talented journalists and a chance to get to know other like-minded residents interested in telling our city’s many stories was an opportunity that I could not pass up.

On January 23, Greater Cleveland Partnership got an early morning wake up call when Sam Allard of Axios Cleveland broke the story that a coalition of grassroots organizations led by Cleveland Owns, the InterReligious Task Force on Central America, Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless, and the Greater Cleveland Housing Justice Coalition would be leading a walkout at the second annual Sustainability Summit organized by Greater Cleveland Partnership.

On a snowy Wednesday night, a small group of 15 residents gathered to talk about the city of Cleveland’s budget in a meeting room tucked in the back of Zone Recreation Center at W. 65th St. and Lorain Ave. in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood.

Between late October and April, over 30 surveyors walked over 1,400 miles, the distance from Cleveland to Key West, Florida. They were compiling of Cleveland’s more than 162,000 land parcels for the Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s newest citywide property inventory, which will help the city target residential improvements and code enforcement. The surveyors walked all these miles, and recorded millions of data points, without leaving the city – or even the sidewalk.
