Last Sunday, July 9, the Pirates drafted LSU right-hander Paul Skenes with the first overall selection in the 2023 Major League Baseball amateur draft. Widely regarded as the best pitching prospect since Stephen Strasburg in 2009, Skenes’ generational potential and major league-ready arm give the Buccos a bonafide ace for the foreseeable future. Skenes marks the sixth first-overall pick in Pirates history, joining top prospect Henry Davis, who was selected first overall in 2021.

The fight in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives over funding for in-state tuition discounts continues after House Republicans blocked millions of dollars in state appropriations for four Pennsylvania universities, including Pitt. House Bill 612 would allocate almost $650 million to Pitt, Temple, Penn State and Lincoln University for the fiscal year beginning on July 1, 2023 and ending on June 30, 2024.

Pittsburgh’s Cultural District filled with vibrant colors last weekend as thousands of anthropomorphics fans made their way to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center for Anthrocon. The event, which attracts thousands of furries from across the country each year, took place from June 29 to July 2 and featured many events including a parade and live music. During the Fursuit Parade, which took place on July 1, Pittsburghers gathered around as the furries displayed their colorful suits.
