Bacterial strainsAll V. cholerae strains used in this study were derivatives of the WT V. cholerae O1 biovar El Tor strain C6706str2 and listed in Supplementary Table 1. The rugose strain background harbors a missense mutation in the vpvC gene (vpvCW240R) that elevates intracellular c-di-GMP levels30. The rugose strains form robust biofilms and thus allow us to focus on the biochemical mechanisms governing biofilm adhesion rather than mechanisms involving gene regulation.
