I didn’t think I needed to see the cover because this one had me at the title: Legendary FryBread Drive-In. It’s so imaginative, isn’t it? I placed my ARC request on Edelweiss. Reading the list of contributors moved me to add the book to my library’s order list. And the cover? Yes, I most certainly needed to see that cover! Editor Cynthia Leitich Smith describes it best, saying that “The cover beckons.

So many of us could tell you want went wrong. We probably all have different ideas, and most are probably right. It was a catastrophe of epic proportions that didn’t just begin with this election cycle. Now, however, our energy is focused on watching things unroll so we can be prepared for what’s next. We are concerned about the future of education, the safety of BIPOC, disabled, and queer and trans bodies, and the bits of equity we’ve gained.

It saddens me to know that some counties here in Indiana do not fund libraries. I think the space, connections, and information that these institutions offer make them necessary to any community. Luckily, I live in a county that funds and strongly supports its library. The county I live in, Vigo County, does a fabulous job of funding the Vigo County Public Library System. Recently, VCPL realized the need for a third library branch.

Facebook can be so profound, like it was with the post I saw last week that simply said, “Next week has been exhausting.” Well, friends, here we are at exhausted. I’m writing this the day before election day, and it feels like the calm before the storm. The day I actually voted was so emotional for me and I really didn’t see it coming! I didn’t realize how worried I am about the future.

I’ve been reading and listening to quite a few books lately, but not taking the time to review them. Some of them have been quite good and definitely deserving of a mention. All of them are 2024 releases. I’m using this month to remember how libraries have nurtured Latine authors, literacy leaders, and book creators. Lucia reminds us how important it is for children to find themselves in books and in our libraries. Lucia M. Gonzalez was born in Caimito del Guayabal, Cuba and emigrated to the United States in 1970 at the age of 11. Lucia received her BA from the University of CA. Santa Barbara and her MLIS from the University of South Florida, Tampa.

My cousins, neighbors and old friends all somehow seem connected to my new friends. My new friends are connected to my work, my hobbies or my Facebook page. I think I only have one old, friend who has a child, a new friend, who became a librarian. The world of Black librarians is very small, and our work often intersects, like it recently did in Cincinnati, Ohio. During its development, Cincinnati was a highly segregated city.

Latine Heritage Month is a time to pause and recognize the many contributions, needs, and expectations of people from throughout Latin America now residing in the United States. In our libraries, we might be developing displays and programs centering Latine culture. We may take the time to expand our own reading habits, intentionally including works by authors from Caribbean, Central, or South American countries.
