One of the most difficult challenges in the restoration of the Oneida Stake Academy Building has been getting the roof in a condition to efficiently and persistently shed water. Its shape and age have been a challenge to address, not just during this restoration process, but throughout its life. “Our restoration and rehabilitation efforts have uncovered many solutions employed by the building’s caretakers over the last century,” said John Olsen, board member of the Oneida Stake Academy Foundation.

Stokes give $100,000 for historic Oneida Stake Academy building restoration

In honor of many generations of family members who attended the Oneida Stake Academy, Stokes Market has committed $100,000 towards the building’s restoration. When complete, it will be a cultural center and museum of local history for the people of Preston and Franklin County. “It’s a jewel. It’s like you go mining and you find that gem in the dirt and polish it up,” said Larry Stokes, owner of Stokes Market.
New ramp at Pop 'n Pins makes bowling more accessible

To improve accessibility to the sport of bowling, a new ramp has been constructed by Jake Johnson through a grant from the Franklin County Heathcare Foundation (FCHF). This nonprofit organization was started as an effort to improve the mental, emotional, and physical health in Franklin County, said its director Kyley Buttars. The new metal ramp replaces a rickety wooden one used to stabilize bowling balls for bowlers.
Upcoming farmers market seeking vendors

Promoting and supporting local farmers and cottage industries is the objective of the Preston Farmer’s Market, which is scheduled to debut during the first week in June. The new organization has been set up to help local farmers and creators find new markets by building a more sustainable community and marketplace for locally grown products.

For almost half a century — from 1922 to 1962 — Franklin County youth were very familiar with hoes and beet knives. They used the sharp tools to keep weeds out of thousands of acres of sugar beets and to top leaves off the sweet, fat roots at harvest-time. According to local sugar production expert, Bill Owens, Franklin County farmers spent several years trying to get Amalgamated Sugar Company to build a factory in Franklin County.

Chief Sagwich and Chief Bear Hunter knew the soldiers would be there, but because they had been able to negotiate differences in the past, they had gone to bed the night before confident they would be able to do so again. So they advanced to meet the military.
