In December, the Law Society’s Women Solicitors Network Committee hosted the newly named Carrie Morrison Lecture at the University of Chester Law School, bringing this annual lecture event focusing on gender equality within the legal sector to the regions for the first time. Building on our 100 Years of Women Solicitors celebrations in 2022, this was an opportunity to reflect on past achievements but more importantly to look forward to the next hundred years.

Solicitors Regulation Authority bosses noticeably bristle when it is suggested they could have done more to prevent the Axiom Ince disaster. Indeed, such is the sensitivity around this issue that during the Q&A with SRA management at the compliance conference yesterday, an audience member’s question of ‘were you asleep at the wheel’ was watered down to a simple enquiry about the latest with the collapsed firm. The regulator’s chief and repeated contention is that it did what was expected of it.

Have you ever felt as though you are being watched? Well, that is because you are. It is well known that the UK has more CCTV cameras than most other western countries. It is hard to know the precise number, as the vast majority are privately owned. But one estimate from 2020 put the figure at 5.2m – which is one camera for every 13 people in the UK. That is not hard to believe – and given the proliferation of doorbell cameras in the past few years, the true figure is probably even higher.

The terms diversity, equity and inclusion have become embedded across the legal profession. But despite huge efforts to move the dial on equality, significant challenges remain. In December 2022, as the Law Society celebrated the centenary of the first four women solicitors to be admitted to the profession, the president, Lubna Shuja, reminded us that while 60% of new admissions are women, only 35% of law firm partners are women, representing an advance of only 0.3% in a decade.
