Here is Throwback Thursday for the week of May 2. Pic 1: Hey, Ken Pendergast! Remember being on the front page of the Citizen 50 years ago this week? You and George Neagle had to wear your snowshoes to put up the Forest Fire Hazard Rating sign at Summit Lake. Sadly, forest fire season was well underway in April in north-central B.C. in 2024.

Working men were encouraged to buy a CCM bike and save themselves the time, sore feet and worn shoe leather in a large ad in the April 26, 1924, edition of the Citizen. But you had to go all the way to page 7 of the 10-page paper to find the news that resonates 100 years later, in the form of a letter from Charles Stewart, the federal Minister of the Interior, about the horrible cost of forest fires across Canada.

“George Campbell Loses His Life Crossing Fraser,” proclaimed the front-page headline in the March 20, 1924, edition of the Citizen. “A man of about thirty year,” Campbell was carrying a pack with his belongings at the time and it was guessed he chose cutting across the ice, instead of walking a couple of miles to the bridge, to catch the train that would have taken him to one of the logging camps west of the city. Two men heard his cries for help and ran to the area.

No regerts. Some people get that as a tattoo, believe it or not. I don’t understand why someone would want a spelling mistake permanently etched onto their skin but I get the idea. No point in dwelling on the past because it can’t be changed. Even the mistakes – no, especially the mistakes – are the fuel for change and improvement. You must be facing forward to work on getting better. That isn’t happening if you’re mired in looking back over your shoulder coulda, shoulda, woulda, regret.

This week, the Prince George RCMP is featuring 44-year-old Shana Diane Perry for Wanted Wednesday. She is wanted on one warrant for possession of a firearm without a license or registration and careless use of a firearm. She is described as 5’4 (163 cm), 181 lb (82 kg), with long, blonde hair, and green eyes Perry is considered dangerous and should not be approached. If you locate her, contact your local police immediately.
